Timor-Leste
After four centuries of Portuguese rule, 24 years of Indonesian occupation, and two years of U.N. administration, Timor-Leste gained independence in May 2002. ¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓÆµ was closely involved with the birth of Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, the first new nation of the 21st century. The Center monitored the 1999 public referendum on independence and, after the vote unleashed a wave of military-backed violence, provided crucial support to bolster the growth of democracy.
